Reading: This week, we focused on picking out key
information from nonfiction articles.
Students practiced this by utilizing the subheadings in an article
about the history of transportation in Chicago. We also read Henry and the Buccaneer
Bunnies. Students determined
various themes that the author presented in the story. On Wednesday, the Arlington Heights
Memorial Library bookmobile came to visit!
Students enjoyed checking about books on the mobile and learning about
the summer reading program!
Reading Logs are due Monday,
June 1. (100 minutes)
|
Math: Students explored various capacity
measurements. Grams, kilograms, and
pounds were investigated. Students
also worked on converting measurement units.
At the end of the week, students learned different strategies to find
the mean, or average.
Xtra Math practice is
due Monday, June 1. (3 sessions) **If students are on double-digit
multiplication fact tests, they are not required to do the Xtra math sessions.

Social Studies: After discussing the world’s fairs that took
place in Chicago, we voted on our favorite Chicago chairs…congratulations
Beth, Giorgio, and Sophie for their creative designs! Everyone did a wonderful job. You can find pictures of these chairs on
our blog. Students also played a landmark game to
identify important locations around Chicago.
Today, students took their Chicago test.

Writing: In WEX, students completed the final copies of
their short fiction stories! They
worked very hard on editing and adding in various revisions. Next week, we will share our stories with
each other.
|
Spelling/Cursive: Last week was our last week for spelling. Students continued working in their cursive
packets.

Miscellaneous: I hope you all enjoyed the holiday weekend! Thank you to Grace’s mom and Kristiine’s
mom for being our class leaders for Field Day and for all the other
volunteers who helped organize this special day! Just a reminder, our Chicago boat field
trip will be on Tuesday. An
informational note about the trip went home today. Please let me know if you have any
questions. Finally, thank you for such
a wonderful school year. I can’t
believe how fast the time has flown by…I truly enjoyed having each of your
children in class! They are a terrific
group of students who are kind and compassionate. They work so well together and have a true
passion for learning! Thank you for
all your support…I hope you have a fabulous summer!
