This Week...

May 30-June 2, 2017

Reading:  This week, we read various Time for Kids articles.  The first article that we read focused on a new process for learning about ancient mummies.  Students used text evidence to support their thinking as they learned how CT scanners can teach us about the past.  Another article focused on a research study that was developed to prove the benefits of exercise.  Students utilized nonfiction text features to determine the main idea of each article.
Reading Logs are due Monday, June 5.  (100 minutes)
Math:  Pictographs were a main focus this week!  Students analyzed the various keys to determine how to read the data.  They also reviewed their end of the year “pop” assessments and made the necessary corrections.
**If applicable: for students still on addition and subtraction, fact tests and graphs are due Monday, June 5.
Science:  This week, students reviewed key concepts from our weather unit.  They took their unit test today.  Students also worked on their Personalized Learning projects!  They chose a wonder to investigate.  After selecting a wonder, students documented their learning using various note-taking strategies.  Some of these strategies included: sketch & label, boxes & bullets, post-it notes, and webs.
Writing:  Students were very excited to share their short fiction pieces!  They read their stories to partners and gave each other important feedback.  Students also had the opportunity to do some creative writing.  They enjoyed sharing these pieces during our read aloud time.
Spelling:  We already completed our last week of spelling.
Miscellaneous:  I hope you all enjoyed the holiday weekend!  Thank you to Maggie’s mom and Mel’s dad for being our class leaders for Field Day and for all the other volunteers who helped organize this special day!  Just a reminder, our Chicago boat field trip will be on Monday.  An informational note about the trip went this week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Finally, thank you for such a wonderful school year.  I can’t believe how fast the time has flown by…I truly enjoyed having each of your children in class!  They are a terrific group of students who are kind and compassionate.  They work so well together and have a true passion for learning!  Thank you for all your support…I hope you have a fabulous summer!

**A brief, final newsletter will go home on the last day of school.
