Reading: Finding the main idea and details of nonfiction
texts was our focus this week! We learned
that the main idea can often be found in the topic sentence of a
paragraph. Sometimes we need to read the
whole section and decide what it is mostly about. Students did a nice job finding supporting
details within the paragraphs.
Reading Logs are due Monday, October 21st. (100 minutes)
Math: We learned the reasoning behind regrouping by using base-10 blocks and practiced solving various subtraction problems. Some of these problems included regrouping in various place values. We also started using REFLEX! Students were very excited to use this new app to help them practice their basic math facts. A letter went home with details about the program and log-in information is in your child’s take- home folder. Our unit 4 math test will be on Wednesday, October 23.
Science: At the beginning of the week, students took their data analysis quiz where they interpreted various graphs. We also started our first social studies unit: map skills! Students looked at a variety of maps, including community maps. They compared and contrasted maps and aerial photographs. The 7 continents were also reviewed with a catchy song!
Writing: In writing, students learned the importance of a story’s title and its opening sentences. We revisited our mentor texts from unit 1 to gain inspiration and ideas. Students also continued revising their drafts. In grammar, students reviewed complete sentences, subjects, predicates, and compound sentences.
Word Study: Students worked on identifying consonant digraphs in various words. They learned that a consonant digraph makes a new sound when two letters are combined. These can be found at the beginning or end of a word.
Miscellaneous: Today, students participated
in a bus evacuation drill to practice important safety rules. Students also started CogAT testing. The final CogAT session will be on Monday
afternoon. Just a reminder, parent-teacher
conferences are next Thursday and Friday, so there will be no school for
students on those days. I look forward
to meeting with you and discussing your child’s progress! Have a wonderful weekend and please let me
know if you have any questions.
