October
7- October 11, 2019
Reading: Students reviewed key ideas from our launch unit! They read a fiction and nonfiction
passage. They practiced making
meaningful connections and visualizations.
They also recorded questions they had while reading each text. At the end of the week, students took their
launch assessment. Next week, we will
begin our nonfiction reading unit! Reading Logs are due Tuesday, October 15th. (100 minutes)
Math: We spent the beginning of the week reviewing
multi-digit addition in order to prepare for our unit 3 assessment. We also previewed unit 4 and began learning
how to subtract numbers up to 10,000. Regrouping
was a main focus. Students enjoyed using
the phrase “If there is more on the floor, go next door”, to remember when to
regroup certain place values. We will
continue working on subtraction next week.
Science: Reading and interpreting
line plots remained our focus this week.
Students learned how to support their conclusions with evidence from the
graphs. On Tuesday, we will be having a quiz
on data analysis. Students will use what
they know about graphs to help them interpret weather data. We will also be starting our first social
studies unit next week: map skills!
Writing: In writing, students selected a piece from their writer’s
notebooks to turn into a published piece.
They began revising it by identifying everyday words that they could
make more interesting. They also
participated in pair conferences to gain important feedback. Students made changes based on their partner’s
suggestions. In grammar, students continued
to practice writing compound sentences.
Word Study: Students worked on contractions. They learned that contractions are formed by
two words. The letter that is taken out
is replaced with an apostrophe.
Miscellaneous: Students have been enjoying the arrival of our Flat
Stanleys! So far, they have learned many
interesting facts about California, Texas, Indiana, and Georgia! October book orders are due October 25. Just a reminder, there will be no school for students
on Monday. Please let me know if you
have any questions. Enjoy the 3-day
weekend!
