January 6 - January 10, 2020
Reading: This week, students focused on nonfiction text features. We began our week by compiling a list of the different ways that nonfiction authors share information with their readers. Students then worked in partnerships to develop a slide show to highlight seven examples. Using a nonfiction book, each team identified specific text feature examples and explained their importance in communicating information.
Reading Logs are due Monday, January 13th. (100 minutes)
Math: This week, we continued working on multiplication in Unit 7. Students applied their knowledge of basic multiplication facts to solve two-digit x one-digit multiplication problems, as well as three-digit x one-digit multiplication problems with and without regrouping. We finished up Unit 7 on Thursday. On Friday, the class began working on Unit 8. Please look for the family letter in your student’s mail.
**Please encourage your child to continue practicing his/her basic multiplication/division facts.
Science: This week, we started our new science unit: inheritance & variation! Students began the unit by investigating dog traits and variations. We discussed how traits are features that identify how an organism looks, acts, or behaves. We continued to dive deeper with a discussion about variations, i.e., all dogs have ears; some are pointy, some are floppy.
Writing: The class began the new year creating New Year’s Resolutions. Each student spent time setting four goals; one home, one school, one personal, and one character goal. They also worked on completing their final copies of their personal narratives. In grammar, students focused on possessive pronouns.
Word Study: Students worked on recognizing consonant letters with different sounds. We also investigated words that contain silent letters.
Miscellaneous: Happy New Year! The Morizzo family welcomed Brady Robert on Thursday, December 26th! The class has “met” Brady via pictures that I’ve posted in the room. I’m excited to be in Room 141 and I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone as the students continue their academic journey!
