Reading: Comparing and contrasting different texts was
our main focus this week! Students read
different nonfiction and fiction texts.
Then, they highlighted key information that showed differences and similarities. They used these key ideas to complete a Venn
diagram. Students also spent time using
nonfiction text features to figure out important information about various
topics.
Reading Logs are due Monday, November 4th. (100 minutes)
Math: We spent the week focusing on bar models in unit 5! Students are learning to use bar models to help them visualize which operation they should use: addition or subtraction. Many problems that we solved involved more than one step. We will continue practicing in class next week.
Social Studies: Students learned all about landforms! We analyzed the similarities and differences between canyons and valleys, as well as plains and plateaus. We also read physical maps to learn where we can find different landforms in our country.
Writing: In writing, students learned about the proofreading process. They figured out how to correct spelling, add periods, and apply correct capitalization. They also worked very hard on their final copies. We can’t wait to share them in our “Author’s Chair”! In grammar, students learned how to write complex sentences with conjunctions.
Word Study: Students worked on identifying common patterns in high frequency words. They learned that knowing these patterns helps them learn new words.
Miscellaneous: On Monday, students participated
in an evacuation drill with the Arlington Heights Fire Department to practice important
safety rules. Students also had a
wonderful time celebrating Halloween this week!
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make our party possible by
running games and/or donating supplies! We
truly appreciate your generosity! As
always, please let me know if you have any questions…have a fantastic weekend!
