This Week...

November 11- November 15, 2019

Reading:  Students focused on the various nonfiction text structures that authors use while writing nonfiction.  Description and chronological were the main structures that students looked for while reading a nonfiction book about wolf pups.  They searched for key signal words and phrases to help them determine the structure.  We also read a biography, Snowflake Bentley, that had a problem/solution text structure.
Reading Logs are due Monday, November 18.  (100 minutes)

Math:  Students took their unit 5 test on Monday.  We also began unit 6!  Students learned how multiplication problems can be represented by arrays and number lines.  They also learned that factors can be in any order due to the commutative property.  Even and odd numbers were also discussed.  Students who are still on addition/subtraction fact tests were moved to multiplication fact tests on Thursday in order to match what we are learning in class.  They will be practicing their addition/subtraction facts in class.

Social Studies:  Students began brainstorming for their country projects!  They took home a direction sheet on Monday.  Country projects are due on Monday, November 18.  We also learned how to read a community map.  Students looked at a map of downtown San Francisco and figured out how to find points of interest.  Next week, we will begin our new social studies unit: The Midwest!

Writing:  In writing, we started our personal narrative unit!  We learned that personal narratives are true stories about the author.  We read Grandma’s Records and My Father’s Hands.  Both books were great examples of how we can use sensory details to describe special memories.  In grammar, students learned that a noun is a person, place, or thing.  We also practiced writing the singular and plural versions of nouns.

Word Study:  Students discovered spelling patterns that produce the long u sound.  They practiced reading and writing words with this sound.

Miscellaneous:  On Monday, we celebrated Veterans Day with a special assembly.  We are so grateful to all of the veterans for serving our country.  We loved hosting a couple of special veterans in our classroom as well!  In the LMC, students were excited to write their scripts and film their extreme weather videos.  Just a reminder, progress reports will be emailed home on Friday, November 15.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Have a great weekend!
