November
4- November 8, 2019
Reading: We started the week reading two interesting
articles in our National Geographic issue.
Students utilized nonfiction text features to find important information
about saving rhinos and how animals regulate their body temperature. We also read a beautiful nonfiction book
called A Butterfly is Patient.
Students utilized an FQR (Fact-Question-Response) chart to record their thinking
and learning about the book.
Reading Logs are due Monday, November 11. (100 minutes)
Math: We continued working on addition and subtraction number stories. Students created bar models to help them visualize the information in each problem. A review guide for this unit went home on Thursday. The unit 5 test will be on Monday, November 11.
Social Studies: Students learned the characteristics of political maps. They learned the symbols for a national capital, state capital, and various borders. At the end of the week, students learned how to read a grid map using an index. They also created their own grid map of a park!
Writing: In writing, students enjoyed sharing and listening to our final stories! They shared a star with each author that highlighted something they loved about the book. Our next unit will focus on personal narratives! In grammar, students reviewed subjects, predicates, compound sentences, and complex sentences.
Word Study: Students analyzed words that had similar vowel patterns but had different sounds. Some examples included “tool” and “book”. They learned to focus on the sounds and the spellings of each word.
Miscellaneous: Students enjoyed “Donuts
with a Grown Up” on Thursday! Thank you
to the PTA for providing this fun experience.
November book orders are due November 22. This will be the last set of book orders that
will arrive before winter break. On
Monday, we will be honoring many special veterans in our lives! Please feel free to wear red, white, and/or
blue to show your patriotism for Veterans Day.
As the weather gets colder,
please make sure your child brings warm outerwear for recess…thank you! Have a wonderful weekend!
